ELECTRIC VEHICLE – AN INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

The Indian electric vehicle industry is a burgeoning sector with immense opportunities for the automobile industry. Like any new sector, it faces initial challenges that need resolution. However, with strong policies like FAME II, India has the potential to become a global electric manufacturing hub.

Electric vehicles in India are poised to address significant issues like rising pollution and oil dependency. Given their lower operational costs, India is uniquely positioned to attract fleet operators, public transportation, and shared mobility platforms. Consumer interest in electric cars is growing rapidly, although actual adoption has been slow. India has sold barely more than 8,000 electric cars in six years, whereas China sells more than that in two days, according to a Bloomberg report from October 2019.

The goal is to match the manufacturing and sales levels of passenger and commercial electric vehicles in China, the USA, and Japan. The electric vehicle market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 43.13% between 2019 and 2030. The industry is anticipated to follow a J-curve trajectory, with significant growth expected after 2020-2021. The next few years are crucial for the Indian electric vehicle industry, which is poised for unprecedented growth. By 2025, the electric vehicle market is likely to become a Rs 50,000-crore opportunity in India, with two- and three-wheelers driving higher electrification of vehicles in the medium term.
